Do Indians Need ETIAS in 2026? Schengen Visa vs ETIAS, Explained
Search “ETIAS India” and you will find panic, outdated launch dates, and ads selling forms you cannot even submit. As of September 2026, ETIAS is not in operation. More importantly: when it does launch, it is aimed at travellers who already visit Europe without a visa — not Indian passport holders.
Short answer
Indian citizens need a Schengen short-stay visa (Type C) for tourism, business visits and most family trips to the Schengen area. You apply through the consulate / VFS with biometrics. ETIAS does not replace that visa and is not an extra form Indians must buy today.
What ETIAS will be — for someone else
ETIAS is modelled on systems like ESTA (USA). Visa-exempt visitors (for example many UK, US and Australian travellers, depending on final rules) will eventually pay a small fee for a multi-year authorisation before they fly. The EU has postponed the start date; official pages say the Union will announce a date months in advance. Ignore anyone collecting “ETIAS for India” payments now.
What you should do instead
Book your VFS appointment early, assemble a complete Schengen file, and buy compliant travel insurance. If you are combining the UK and Schengen, those are two systems: a UK visitor visa does not cover France, and a Schengen visa does not cover the UK.
