EES Schengen Entry/Exit System 2026: What Indian Travellers Must Know
Europe’s Entry/Exit System (EES) replaced many passport stamps with a digital record of when non-EU visitors enter and leave. For Indian travellers on a Schengen visa, the holiday itself does not change — the queue at first entry might. Knowing what happens at the kiosk saves time and avoids overstay confusion later.
Is EES the same as ETIAS?
No. EES is a border register: fingerprints and a facial image linked to your passport, plus entry and exit dates. ETIAS is a pre-travel authorisation for visa-free nationalities. Indian passport holders still need a Schengen visa. You do not apply for ETIAS on top of that visa. (ETIAS itself is not in operation as of September 2026.)
What happens at the airport
On first registration, expect a facial image and fingerprints if they were not already captured for your visa, plus questions that used to live in the landing card. Later trips in the same passport validity are usually faster. Allow extra time at Paris, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Rome and other busy hubs — especially in school holidays.
Families should keep the same travel group at the desk. Minors still travel on the same rules as before; the system simply logs them.
The 90/180-day rule is now easier to enforce
Schengen still allows most short-stay visitors 90 days in any 180-day period. EES makes it harder to “lose count.” If you combine France, Italy and a side trip to Switzerland, those days add up. We build itineraries that respect the calculator — important for snow-season returns and back-to-back Europe trips.
How to prepare before you fly
Carry the same file you used for the visa: hotel list, return ticket, insurance, and funds. EES does not replace those checks. Keep your visa vignette clean and your passport chip readable. If you changed passports after the visa was issued, speak to us before travel.
