Kenya Safari Planning Guide: Which Park, Best Season & Budget
A Kenya safari is one of the most consistently life-changing travel experiences available — but it requires more planning than most trips. The park you choose, the season you go, the accommodation tier, and your guide all determine whether you see a lion kill at sunrise or spend four days looking at empty grass. This guide covers every decision point so you arrive prepared.
The National Parks: Which One Is Right for You
Maasai Mara National Reserve in southwest Kenya is Kenya's most famous safari destination and for good reason: it borders Tanzania's Serengeti, shares the Great Migration, and has the highest density of big cats (lion, leopard, cheetah) of any park in East Africa. Game drives here are almost guaranteed to be productive year-round. The downside is that it attracts proportionally more vehicles, and the most famous sighting spots can become crowded with 8–12 safari jeeps in peak season. Choose Maasai Mara if the Great Migration is your goal or if this is your first safari.
Amboseli National Park in southern Kenya offers the most photogenic backdrop in African wildlife photography: large elephant herds with Mount Kilimanjaro behind them. When Kilimanjaro is clear (most often in the early morning), the image is extraordinary. Amboseli is smaller than the Mara and has fewer big cats, but its elephants are habituated to vehicles and allow remarkably close approach. Combine it with Maasai Mara for a varied 7–10 day circuit.
Samburu National Reserve in northern Kenya is completely different in character from the southern parks — dry, semi-arid, with different species: Grevy's zebra (larger, more narrowly striped), reticulated giraffe, Somali ostrich, and gerenuk (the long-necked antelope that stands on its hind legs to reach acacia branches). The Ewaso Nyiro river runs through the reserve; game viewing along the riverbank is exceptional. Samburu sees far fewer visitors than the Mara and rewards travellers who want something beyond the standard circuit.
Lake Nakuru National Park is Kenya's rhino sanctuary — both black and white rhino populations have been re-established here. The lake itself (when water levels are optimal) attracts flamingo in large numbers. It's typically combined with other parks rather than visited alone; it makes an excellent one-night stop on the drive between Nairobi and Maasai Mara.
The Great Migration: When and Where
The Great Migration — approximately 1.5 million wildebeest, 250,000 zebra, and 500,000 Thomson's gazelle moving in a circular pattern between the Serengeti and Maasai Mara — is one of the most spectacular wildlife events on earth. The river crossings, where herds plunge across the Mara River under threat from Nile crocodiles, are the most dramatic single event in African wildlife and are only observable in Kenya.
The herds are in Kenya's Maasai Mara from approximately July through October. River crossings happen unpredictably within this window — you cannot schedule a viewing on a specific day, but spending 3–4 nights at the Mara during August or September gives good odds of witnessing at least one. September is generally considered the peak crossing month.
Outside the migration months, Kenya's Maasai Mara still offers superb game viewing year-round. The dry season (January–March and June–July) concentrates animals around water sources, making sightings easier and more predictable.
Accommodation Tiers and What They Mean
Tented camps are the classic Kenya safari accommodation — canvas-walled rooms on raised platforms, usually with en-suite bathrooms and hot showers. They range enormously in quality from basic budget camps (USD 120–200/person/night) to luxury operations (USD 600–1,200/person/night). The key differentiator is guide quality, vehicle quality, and exclusivity of game areas. Luxury camps often have private conservancy access alongside the national park, meaning fewer vehicles and longer permitted game drive hours.
Lodge accommodation offers more solid construction and hotel-standard facilities. More suitable for families with young children or travellers less comfortable with canvas walls (or the sounds that accompany them at night). Typically USD 200–500/person/night at mid-range.
Most Kenya safari packages quote on a full-board basis (all meals included). Park fees are typically extra at USD 50–200/person/day depending on the park and season; confirm whether your package includes these or not.
What to Budget
A realistic Kenya safari budget for a 7-night trip for two including flights from India breaks down roughly as:
Budget (mid-range camps, 2 parks): INR 4.5–6L total — solid game viewing, competent guides, decent camps.
Mid-range (quality tented camps, 2–3 parks, private vehicle): INR 7–10L total — private vehicle for game drives, better guide quality, camps with genuine bush atmosphere.
Luxury (exclusive conservancy access, top-tier camps): INR 12L+ total — private conservancy game drives, walking safaris, night drives (often prohibited in national parks but allowed in private conservancies), exceptional food and service.
Practical Notes for Indian Travellers
Indian passport holders require a Kenya e-visa (apply online via the official Kenya eCitizen portal). Cost is USD 51 for a single-entry tourist visa; processing takes 2–3 business days but apply at least 2 weeks before travel. The visa allows 90 days.
Nairobi's Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) connects well from India via Emirates (Dubai hub), Ethiopian Airlines (Addis Ababa hub), and Kenya Airways directly from Mumbai. Flight time is 7–9 hours depending on routing. Nairobi is at 1,700 metres elevation — the city is pleasantly cool (18–24°C year-round) unlike most equatorial capitals.
Yellow fever vaccination certificate is required for entry if arriving from or transiting through a yellow fever risk country. Check the current list; India is not on it but certain African transit hubs are. Malaria prophylaxis is recommended for safari areas.
